Why I love to garden!

Botanica Landscape Inc.
So many of you follow me because you love to garden. Well, here is a surprise, I DO TOO! Why do so many of us have such a love of all things green and growing? Especially those of us who also do this for a living? You'd think I'd want to find another hobby? No, I love it so much, that there isn't a day that goes by that I am not thankful to be able to do this for a living.  After my illness (I am a stem cell receipient after surviving leukemia) my doctors were ok with me going back to work, why?  Because I work outdoors in the fresh air.  I love to go to nurseries and could walk around for hours looking at new varieties of…

Pots and Container gardening

How To
Nothing brightens up a patio as much as well planned pots do. Following some simple steps and "rules" you can be a fabulous container gardener. I use the word pots, but this can apply to any type of container. As long as the container has proper drainage and you use a well draining potting soil, you can grow in it. Pots aren't just for flowers. You can grow veggies, fruit trees and even vines in pots. I borrowed this photo from Pinterest and I'm sorry I can't read the name to give credit. The taller in the back, shorter in the front.  This grouping are all different colors but…

How To, Plants
So many clients and friends tell me that they have a brown thumb. This will be the first part in a series on educating you on these simple rules of turning your brown thumb green! Part 1 of our lessons is going to be an important one. This is all about fertilizing. When I ask how often clients are fertilizing, typically they will tell me that their gardener fertilizes about once a year. Seriously? Fertilizer for plants is like vitamin supplements for our bodies. Can we exist without vitamin or nutrient supplements? Sure, we can go without, but how much better do we feel with them? If you want the optimum plant growth, blooms or fruit, fertilizing is a major addition. You would be very surprised to see how well…

Dreaming of a Hawaiian landscape

Dreaming of a Hawaiian landscape

Plants
A previous post on a Hawaiian pirate ship has me thinking about Hawaiian plants. Maybe because I really, really need a Hawaiian vacation? Since we have family on the island of Oahu, we have traveled there extensively. Whenever I visit, I take the opportunity to observe the plants and how I can incorporate them into my client's gardens. My favorite part of tropical landscapes is that there are always many textures, colors and sizes in the foliage as well as the flowers. Landscaping in Hawaii is surprisingly similar to the south bay of Los Angeles. Our climate is very similar to many areas of Hawaii (except for the rain forest areas). We can create a micro climate by easily adjusting our watering schedules and making sure that we choose the…
